Finding the right living situation for your loved one with dementia.

When families reach the point of deciding where to relocate their loved ones due to the inability to care for them at home, a multitude of factors come into play. However, the predominant emotion experienced by family members during this process is guilt. This guilt stems from various sources, such as not being able to maintain care at home, failing to halt the progression of the disease, and struggling to pinpoint the exact cause of their guilt.

As families progress through this journey and explore different care options, they must prioritize what matters most in their search. Is a memory care-exclusive facility the best choice? Or perhaps an assisted living facility with an exceptional memory care unit? Could a small assisted living residence, offering memory support in a homely environment, be the

ideal solution? Other considerations include the availability of round-the-clock nursing, engaging activities for the loved one, person-centered care, and staff trained specifically in dementia care. All of these factors contribute to the overwhelming nature of the dementia journey.

I recommend starting by taking a moment to relax! Seek help from others when facing these choices. Consult with a reliable expert who can handle the details for you. This will streamline your search and simplify the decision-making process. Consider joining a support group. Remember, you are not alone in dealing with dementia. Learning from other families' experiences can be beneficial for you and vice versa.

Don't be too tough on yourself. Release the guilt. Your loved one is not at fault. You are not at fault. Dementia is a process. You are acting based on your instincts - trust your heart!
